Artists should rejoice! There is a technology out there that is becoming more and more available to the public. What is this technology I’m talking about? 3D printing. What is it? 3D Printing is an older technology that is now becoming available for the everyday artist and 3D Designer. This technology allows artists to print 3D models of their designs… What do I mean when I say print 3D models? Taking a 3D computer generated image and manufacturing it into a physical figurine. Artists can turn their designs into real objects! This technology works like this – a computer generated image will be sent to a 3D printer. The printer, will then create the image layer by layer out of various materials. For example, the printer might create an ABS plastic model by producing it layer by layer and fusing the layers together. Through 3D printers, artists can print 3D models of their creations!
There are quite a few materials out there right now that can be used when trying to print 3D models. There are companies out there offering a wide variety to choose from. Some places offer 5-10 materials. Some offer over 50! These materials could be ceramics, plastics, rubber like materials, metals, materials with mechanical properties, or even precious metals. Artists can print 3D models out of gold, silver, and platinum!
This technology gives artists so much freedom when designing 3D art. They have the power to create virtually anything out of virtually any material. There are so many choices to choose from. This method of manufacturing is also much more dynamic than other methods like traditional molding or CNC cutting When artists print 3D models, they don’t have to worry about certain aspects, for example: through 3D printing, artists can print 3D models that are similar to rubics cubes, certain puzzle like products, mechanical functioning products, and other significant products such as a ball within a ball. These kinds of products are unheard of in traditional mold manufacturing, as well as CNC cutting.
How do artists benefit when they print 3D models? Imagine an artist spending hours and hours on a project. This model was his or her vision, and they created it. All the time and effort was thrown in this model… for what? Well, artists can see their models on their computers, but that seems kind of bland in my opinion. Imagine that artist being able to hold his or her model, in their own hands. Imagine how inspiring it would be to know that you created something – you brought it to life. What else comes for artists who print 3D models? Imagine interviewing for a game company. You would be just another interviewee with good designs. Unless you printed your models! How cool would it be for your interviewer to hold your work? Perhaps an artist was an engineer for a drilling company. Imagine that artist being able to bring in physical scaled models of your drills, pipe, and other parts. For an interviewer to be able to see your models in person – that could be powerful. Very powerful. When an artist would print 3D models, he or she could greatly prove his or her chances of landing a job!

The growing number of services provided online has introduced numerous scams as well. Rather than fall victim to one of these illegitimate companies that seems to be offering a deal too good to be true, you’re better off locating someone online that you can deal with locally. This way, you can present your device in person, speak about it and make a transaction face to face. This personal contact is certainly the best solution for learning how to sell your iPad.
Of course you’ll want to have a frame of reference before making any kind of deal. Make note of the figures you see online, paying special attention the model and memory capacity of your particular tablet computer. Also pay close attention to any physical wear and tear that might affect the overall value. If you had the unfortunate luck of having dropped or scratched your device, the price is undoubtedly going to go down. In any case, learning how to sell your iPad doesn’t have to be a complicated ordeal, and you can easily get the facts, the figures, and make the deal without even having to leave your neighborhood.
While there may be numerous ways of dealing your used and even new electronic devices, knowing how to sell your iPad does require a bit of research if you plan on doing it right. Many people fall victim to internet scams where they mail their electronics out, expecting to be paid a handsome sum, only to learn that some trickster halfway across the globe just conned the them out of a deal. For this reason, it’s important to investigate the legitimacy of the services out there, seeking out costumer reviews and ratings. Additionally, if given the opportunity to sell locally, it’s always best to arrange a deal with someone that you can meet in person and place your trust in.

What Is Computer Assisted Surgery?
CAS refers to a surgical concept that involves the use of computer technology. It is also referred to as computer aided surgery, computer assisted intervention, and surgical navigation.
How Does It Work?
CAS combines the precision of computer technology and the skill of a surgeon. The advances in health field have made it possible for medical professionals to use various technologies like 3D imaging and real-time sensing to plan and execute surgical procedures.
In CAS, a virtual 3D model of the anatomical region of the patient to be operated is produced using specialized software. The surgeon examines the 3D model, assesses the case, and plans the surgery carefully.
In many cases, specialized software programs are used to create a moving digital image of the patient’s anatomical region as it is moved during the surgery. The image is processed in real time and it serves as a roadmap for the surgical procedure. It also guides the placement of surgical instrument during the surgery. The availability of such real-time data helps the surgeon enormously and allows him to complete the surgery successfully.
What Are the Applications of Computer Assisted Surgery?
Computer technology is used in a variety of standard as well as high precision surgical procedures including ENT surgery, orthopedic surgery, oral and facial surgery, visceral surgery, radiosurgery, and neurosurgery.
What Are the Benefits of CAS?
CAS is one of the important reasons behind the advances in health field, particularly in terms of surgical procedures, in the past few decades. There are a number of reasons why CAS is widely gaining recognition among medical professionals all over the world.
* It creates a virtual three-dimensional model of the anatomical region that is about to be operated. It allows surgeons to plan and simulate the surgery in a virtual, preoperative environment. It reduces the difficulties and risks associated with the surgical procedure significantly.
* It increases the accuracy of the surgical procedure considerably, which means smaller incisions, less pain, less scarring, shorter hospital stay, and shorter recovery time.
* It plays a key role in joint replacement surgeries that require precise implant placement. In a non-CAS surgery, there is always a risk of incorrect prosthetic alignment due to human error. In a CAS surgery, there are no such risks as the surgeon can use real-time data to correct the procedure intra-operatively and make sure the prosthetic is positioned perfectly.
* It increases the precision and accuracy of surgical cuts. It lowers blood loss and reduces the number of embolic occurrences.
* It offers valuable real-time data to the surgeon during the planning, execution, and follow-up of the surgery. It reduces the risk of preoperative, intra-operative, and post-operative complications to a great extent. So, the patient is able to recover and return to his normal life quickly.
Looking Beyond Computer Assisted Surgery
CAS plays a key role in improving the precision and accuracy of surgical procedures and reducing the risks and difficulties associated with the same. It reduces the operating time and makes the job of the surgeon easier.
One of the benefits of CAS is that it has led to other developments in the field of medical science. For example, it is one of the important factors that led to the development of robotic surgery, which is considered one of the incredible advances in health field.

An OS is installed on the computers’ hard disk, inside an area called hard disk partition. There are several ways for installing a new operating system. The installation method is based on the system hardware and end-user requirements. Generally, you have four basic options for the installation of a new operating system:
Clean Installation
We can perform a clean installation on a new computer or in those cases where there is no upgrade path between the current operating system and the new one. This type of installation deletes all data on the hard disks partition where the current operating system is installed. A new PC requires, of course a clean installation. You can also do a clean install when the current operating system installation has corrupted files or does not work properly.
Upgrade Installation
Sometimes, it is also possible to perform an upgrade. When you perform an upgrade, OS configuration settings, installed programs and data are preserved. With this installation you have nothing to worry about, because you will not lose any personal data. You will just replace the old operating system files with the new, upgraded files. However, keep in mind that after the upgrade the applications and drivers that are incompatible with the new OS will not work as expected.
Multi-boot Installation
Another option is to install multiple operating systems on a single computer. You can install each OS inside a different disk partition and this way every OS will have its own files and configuration settings. On multi-boot installations, the users see a menu when they open their computers and they have to select the desired OS. Of course, only one operating system can run at a time.
Virtualization
This is relative new technique that is often used on servers. With virtualization we can run numerous copies of an operating system on a single set of hardware and create this way several virtual machines. Every single virtual machine works like a separate computer. This technology makes a single physical hardware resource to appear like multiple logical resources.
Before starting any operating system installation you have to make sure that all the hardware is certified to work with the new operating system. Also confirm that the hardware resources meet the minimum installation requirements. Moreover, when you perform an upgrade it is a very good practice to perform a virus scan before starting the installation and a complete full backup of all your personal data.
One method that helps you protect your data is this: Create multiple partitions on the hard disk and install a different OS on each partition. Then copy all your data inside an empty partition that does not contain an OS. This way you can upgrade the operating system without the risk of losing any data. Backup and recovery of data files is also easier with this design.
It is also important to decide the type of file system to use. The file system controls how the OS stores and tracks the files. There are several different file systems available. The most well-known are: FAT 32, NTFS, HPFS, ext2 and ext3. Every operating system is designed to use one or more of these file systems. There are advantages and disadvantages on every file system. Careful consideration should be made to the type of file systems supported by the selected OS and the benefits of each.
You can find several programs to modify the partitioning structure and file system of a hard drive after installation, but it is better to avoid them if possible. When modifying either the file system or partition structure on a hard drive, data loss may result. Careful planning can help preserve the integrity of the data.

This article is motivated by my observations of computing trends over the years and triggered by recent trends showcased at CES 2012.
Sometimes I wonder about the industry moving in a circle, hopping from one thing to another, and finally back to the same thing as in the first instance.
Computing started with a mainframe shared by many users. Then the coming of the personal computer ushered in the era of personal and dedicated computing where I alone was master of the machine in front of me, no longer having to share it with others. The desktop PC was a highly functional standalone computing machine, with as much computing power as the low-end mainframe of the past.
Then came the Internet/Web where the PC saw tremendous utility as the portal to cyberspace but at the same time able to do tremendous standalone work (e.g. business applications, graphics packages, multi-media processing).
Then others in the industry promoted the “thin client” (cheap device) to access cloud computing in a distributed computing architecture. There were similar parallels in the Unix world where the X Window System allowed multi-client access from diskless “dumb terminals” to a shared machine.
With the advent of the smartphone, each generation seeing an increase in computing power (consistent with Moore’s Law), it is now a struggle to build the most powerful mobile “smart terminal” to cyberspace, with all the advantages of distributed computing. And each smartphone platform with its own O/S and its particular hardware aspects (e.g. screen size/resolution) is off to the races to produce the greatest number (not necessarily the most useful) “native” applications humanity has yet to see.
Yet others in the industry are touting smartphone “web apps” as the way to bridge disparate O/S platforms and devices. I suppose the next step is to build a “dump smartphone” to access cyberspace (as in the thin client and cloud computing model).
Refinements:
The “computer” for me started with the calculator available in the Sears catalog for $150. It had basic scientific functions. I got it for Christmas that year. It was less powerful than today’s $5 calculator available everywhere.
Computing for me started as writing programs for an IBM mainframe using punch cards fed to a punch card reader with my program results printed on a printer. The user-accessible “computer room” contained a card reader and printer for shared use. The actual computer was in a much larger room.
We often see new products introduced to the market which are essentially the “new old.” Although there are new technologies being introduced, many devices and gadgets appearing at CES 2012 are re-spins of prior utilities or products, albeit with improvements technologically and otherwise.

Slides won’t last forever, no matter how you store them. Over time, the colors in the film will fade, and mold will eventually appear- distorting your image. Luckily, there is a way you can put a stop to this degradation. If you are interested in taking this project on by yourself, here are some steps you should take in order to get the best results.
1. Get your slides out of storage! This first step may seem intimidating, as many don’t have the slighted clue where they might be, but if you want to undergo the task of researching equipment, you will want to make sure you know where your slides are first! You’ll also want to know how many slides you actually have and what kind of project you’ll be looking at.
2. Research and find the right scanner to fit your needs. Things you will want to keep in mind when looking for scanners: budget & desired quality. As with most things, the better the quality, the higher the price tag. You can buy a film scanner for as little as $50, but your results will definitely suffer. The best scanners will have a technology known as ‘Digital Ice’ that will digitally remove most dust and scratch marks- enhancing the appearance of your film. Many scanners will also have a type of “auto-feed” system for slides, making it so that you can pre-load a number of images (usually up to 50) and have them scan automatically. If you determined in step 1 that you have a lot of slides, this will be an option worth looking at.
3. Choose your software.
Scanning software: Most scanners come with proprietary scanning software. In most cases, this is sufficient. However, this isn’t always the case and there are other options for getting the most out of your newly purchased scanner. VueScan is the most recommended program in scanning your slides. Not only does it offer automatic color correction, but it will scan automatically as well (when paired with a scanner that has the same capabilities). It is compatible with almost any brand and model of scanner available, even those not currently on the market. In addition, if you have an old scanner but can’t find the drivers, VueScan comes preloaded with drivers for it. It also is updated on a regular basis, so even the newest of scanners should be compatible. It’s available for Windows, MacOS, and Linux. An all-around great buy.Photo Editing Software – While the scanning software makes a big difference with the quality of image you’ll get from your slides, inevitably you will need to touch them up with some photo editing software. With a program like Photoshop or PaintShop, you can manually fix brightness/contrast, fade, color correction, and with the right skills, you can even edit scratches and mold out of your images. On a tight budget? Free online photo editing options exist, such as Pixlr.com. Just upload your image and you can do color and brightness correction from your browser. Very simple and best of all, it’s free!
4. Physically organize your slides before scanning. Whether it’s a mistake made during scanning or you simply want to look at the original slide, be sure to keep them organized. This will come in handy and make it much easier to sort through them to find the slide you’re looking for. Keeping your groups around 50 slides tends to be the sweet spot. It’s a number that’s manageable and still works well with many automatic feeders. In addition, you will have less sorting to do from your computer once they are scanned.
5. Set up your scanner and software with your desired settings. Make sure you have read the user manuals on each item you use to ensure the best results possible.
Color & Brightness – If you’re a beginner, use the automatic settings for color and brightness. This will dynamically select the best option for the slide that is currently being scanned. You can sometimes achieve better results by manually changing the settings for each image – but this can be tedious and time-consuming. The default automatic settings for most software will usually achieve great results. And if you happen to find an unsatisfactory image, then you can simply rescan it with manual settings. If your scanner has ‘Digital Ice’ capability, then make sure this is selected.Resolution – For slide scanners, 4000 DPI (Dots, or pixels, Per Inch) tends to be the highest available. Lower resolutions are, naturally, lower quality and higher resolutions aren’t usually any better because the slides don’t contain enough information to make it beneficial. When in doubt, opt for the highest DPI your scanner provides. Memory is cheap nowadays, and you’ll feel better knowing you’ve gotten all the detail from your slides.Format – JPEG and TIFF are the most common. TIFF is a completely uncompressed image, and its files are generally about 4x as large as a comparable JPEG. While JPEG is technically compressed, you’ll want to make sure to set the compression settings to the lowest possible if you go this route. Unless you’re an avid photographer, JPEG will be the best option.
6. Go ahead and scan your slides! While scanning with an automatic feeder, watch out for slides that get jammed and don’t fully capture, but most of all, enjoy the everlasting results!
If this task sounds too laborious or costly, Larsen Digital Services is there to meet your needs. We scan slides, movie film, vhs tapes, and much more!
While some prefer to keep their old format film in their homes by scanning it themselves, Larsen Digital Services offers a safe and affordable way to preserve your memories without the hassle on your end. The cost of having us scan your film will most likely be less than buying equipment and software that might give you the same result. Visit us at larsendigital.com for more details.
